The Language Semi-Immersion Excellence Program provides Year 8 and 9 students with the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the French language by electing to study the subject of Religion in French.

What is Language Semi-Immersion?

Language Semi-Immersion is based on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). CLIL is a well-researched and internationally successful approach to teaching languages. The St John Fisher College French Semi-Immersion Program draws on innovative approach and quality teaching to challenge and extend students to achieve academic excellence.

By contextualising the teaching of language, French Semi-Immersion makes learning more meaningful and accelerates language acquisition.

In addition to standard French language classes which focus on grammar, vocabulary and culture, our Year 8 & 9 Language Semi-Immersion students complete their Religious Education curriculum in the French language, including class instruction and assessment.

Language semi-immersion is an engaging and innovative way for students to learn another language and improve their self-discipline and motivation as a learner by studying the curriculum of a subject in the French language. These students will continue to study French grammar, vocabulary, and culture in their standard French language class.

Girls who have a passion for learning, a desire to expand their brains and develop their skills as a learner and who are prepared to work hard, should consider Language Semi-Immersion.

While the Language Semi-Immersion Program provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their French language skills, perhaps the most significant benefits extend beyond language learning. Learning any language through semi-immersion provides benefits that are the building blocks for a successful learner. some of these benefits include:

  • Improved study skills, self-discipline and motivation
  • Greater mental flexibility
  • Enhanced listening and thinking skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • An improved understanding of the English language
  • Faster language acquisition
  • The confidence and enrichment that comes from success
Beyond Semi-Immersion: Accelerated French & French Extension
The Language Semi-Immersion approach results in students acquiring the language at an accelerated rate.
At the end of Year 9, Semi-Immersion students have generally surpassed the language skills of a standard Year 10 French class. Consequently, Semi-Immersion students complete the Year 11 and 12 curriculum in Year 10 and 11, in Accelerated French. This fast-tracked approach to Senior French gives students the opportunity to challenge themselves further by studying Extension French during Year 12.
Students in the Accelerated French program have the opportunity to sit the DELF B1 exam, an internationally recognised qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education. The DELF certifies proficiency in French language and serves as a meaningful acknowledgment of each student’s commitment and progress throughout the program.
